Interview with Jonathan Shapiro or Zapiro winner of the 2019 Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres one of France's highest cultural honors

Jonathan Shapiro

South Africa's most famous and most awarded political cartoonist, Jonathan Shapiro, better known as Zapiro, will soon be speaking on Zoom with the LiteraryGlobe. Watch us interview him live on May 28th at 19:00 hrs CET (Cape Town 19:00 SAST; United Kingdom 18:00 UTC+1 hour; New York, USA 13:00 EDT)

Born in Cape Town, the 62-year-old cartoonist got his start as an activist in the 1980s. Shortly after studying architecture, Zapiro was conscripted into the army for two years, where he refused to carry arms and in 1983, he became active in the newly formed anti-Apartheid movement, the United Democratic Front.

His work as a cartoonist began in earnest with a wide range of political and progressive organizations. Zapiro’s cartoons to date, often reflect his independent thinking and rebel actions, particularly those satirising South Africa’s former disgraced President, Jacob Zuma.

Zapiro was the first cartoonist to win a category prize in the CNN African Journalist of the Year Awards in 2001. Previously he was published in Mail & Guardian, Sowetan, Sunday Times, Independent Newspapers, and The Times. He has also won numerous International and South African awards and has two honorary doctorates.
