A group of friends decided to create a new kind of magazine—one in which the most interesting and lively minds they could find would discuss current books and issues in depth, and with all the authority and knowledge they possessed. The result was what The New Yorker recently called "the best first issue of any magazine ever.
Part of a book and a poem are read aloud during these relaxed and informal sessions, with an Open Book Lead Reader on hand to help guide the discussion. We also regularly run creative writing sessions for our readers, using the material the group is reading as inspiration to create a new writing. We also arrange and fund visits by these groups to the Edinburgh International Book Festival in August, and the Wigtown Book Festival in September, linking the authors we see on the visit to the reading materials we use in our sessions. Welcome to the Suffolk Poetry Society Website. We hope you'll enjoy your visit. We offer a varied program of events at different venues, mostly in the county of Suffolk; an annual poetry competition, a postal portfolio group, in which members share and critique their poems (we plan to introduce some e-poetry groups shortly) and a link to several poetry cafés in the region. Most of our events are open to everybody, but if you are a member you enjoy priority booking and reduced rates.
